Why Your Turntable Hums (and How to Ground It Properly)?

 

A steady, low-pitched hum coming through your speakers — separate from the quiet hiss that's normal for any analog system — is one of the most common turntable complaints, and it is almost always fixable in a couple of minutes without any tools.

What Causes Turntable Hum

Hum is typically a ground loop: a small difference in electrical potential between two connected devices (your turntable and your receiver or amplifier) that creates a current loop picked up as an audible 60Hz hum. Turntables are especially prone to this because the phono signal is so small to begin with — the same tiny gain stage that amplifies your records also amplifies any stray electrical noise.

Connect the Ground Wire — the First and Most Common Fix

Most turntables include a thin wire, separate from the RCA audio cables, ending in a spade connector or loop. This is the ground wire, and its entire job is to equalize electrical potential between the turntable and the receiver.

  • Locate the "GND" or ground terminal on your receiver or phono preamp, usually near the phono input.

  • Loosen the terminal screw, wrap or hook the ground wire's connector around it, and tighten it back down.

  • Power the system back on and listen — a proper ground connection resolves the large majority of turntable hum on the spot.

If your turntable has no separate ground wire and still hums, check whether the ground is instead built into the RCA connectors themselves (common on some direct-drive and DJ-style turntables), and confirm those connectors are fully seated.

If Grounding the Wire Doesn't Fix It

  • Try a different power outlet, ideally on a different circuit — some ground loop hum comes from the building's electrical wiring rather than the turntable itself.

  • Move the turntable's power cable and any wall-warts away from the RCA signal cables — running them in parallel, especially bundled together, can induce hum independent of grounding.

  • Test with a different phono input or preamp, if available, to isolate whether the hum is coming from the turntable side or the amplification side.

What Not to Do

Do not use a "cheater plug" (a three-prong to two-prong adapter) to defeat a component's ground pin as a way to stop hum. This can eliminate the hum, but it does so by removing a real electrical safety ground, not by fixing the underlying loop — a genuine shock and fire safety risk that isn't worth the tradeoff.

Hum vs. Other Noise: How to Tell the Difference

  • A steady 60Hz hum that's present even with the volume at a normal listening level and no record playing → grounding issue, addressed above.

  • A quiet, constant hiss that's only noticeable at high volume → normal phono preamp noise floor, not a grounding problem.

  • A popping or crackling sound, rather than a steady tone → almost always a dirty record or stylus, not electrical.

The Bottom Line

Turntable hum is one of the most common new-setup complaints and, in the vast majority of cases, one of the fastest to fix — connect the ground wire correctly before assuming anything is actually broken.
